We have recently co-written and published OFF THE BENCH – A Quarter of a Century of Non League Management – the biography of Gordon Bartlett, presently Manager of Ryman League Wealdstone FC.  Gordon has been a non-league Manager for 25 years (now in his sixteenth year at Wealdstone FC) and we think this is a little bit different from the usual sports biographies as Gordon has spent his time generally at clubs with no money and with players that struggle to get time off from their day jobs (as does he as a School Teacher), but the pressure to perform and get results remains the same. It’s certainly an insight into the ‘sharp end’……..or should that be the blunt end of the game.

I take it all back. In a well publicised spat with Gordon in 2002 he accused me of writing negative reports, the inference in my response was that he should stick to management and leave me to do the reporting. A great read to anyone not just inside the club but even more so, to someone outside, especially to full time managers in the pro game. It will open their eyes to what it is like to be a non-league manager with a low budget, relying on players who let him down, playing 4 games in a week while still having to do a full time job! Premier league managers and players moan about playing 5 games in 14 days sometimes. Well maybe they should play at our level!
